The California State Bell
The publisher of http://www.Gostate.org is pleased to announce the Beta Edition of the http://www.CaliforniaStateBell.com website. This website is named after the California State Normal School (A.D. 1881) bell, which commemorates that institution, founded by the California Legislature on May 2, 1982, and now known as “San Jose State”. This site, which will take a statewide perspective on the CSU, is dedicated to: (a) California State Normal School and California State University (CSU) historic preservation; and (b) reform of the CSU system for the benefit of all CSU students, alumni and professors. http://www.CaliforniaStateBell.com | | Sunday, May 7th, 2006 | | 10:50 am |

CSU Spartans and the Spartan Squad
The CSU Spartans ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CSU_Spartans ) was founded in October 2003 to support Spartan athletics and work toward the restoraton of San Jose's identity as the founding campus and flagship of the California State University. This fall, a new group, called the Spartan Squad, has come on the scene. Although a recent news story said the Spartan Squad deliberately left "SJSU" off the front of their free T-shirts, the group does not explicitly support CSU restoration in San Jose. It seems fairly obvious that the CSU Spartans helped inspire the creation of the Spartan Squad. The CSU Spartans urges all of its members, and other supporters of the CSU restoraton movement in San Jose to become involved in the Spartan Squad and try to move it in a more pro-California State direction. The CSU Spartans also urges the leaders of the Spartan Squad to study the school's history, and keep an open mind to the advantages a more regional identity could bring to the school, its students, graduates, and athletics programs. The CSU Trustees voted yesterday to change CSU Hayward's name to "California State University, East Bay". See CSU Leader newsletter below, or visit http://www.calstate.edu/CSULeader/2005/050126.htm . See also the CSUEB name change FAQ at: http://www.calstatehaywardnews.com/news/publish/article_386.shtml The name was changed "help increase regional awareness and visibility of the university, expand fundraising capabilities, enhance the relationship with the East Bay communities, and recruit students, especially first-time freshmen." Now CSUEB, founded in 1959, has both a state and a regional identity, while the oldest CSU, founded in 1862 and located in San Jose, is dependent on its geographically restrictive "San Jose State" identity. Where does this leave "San Jose State," a school that was founded as the California State Normal School (1862-1921), and was named the California State University, San Jose from 1972-1974, but is now almost entirely dependent on the sprawling and disconnected City of San Jose for its identity? Is maintaining an identity that is so dependent on one city good for the oldest California State University, its students and graduates? For information on a plan to expand San Jose's geographic appeal, prestige and stature by capitalizing on its status as the oldest California State University, please see http://www.gostate.org/CSU_Restoration_Program_San_Jose.htm . Mercury News Writer Gives Nod to California State Spartans
See: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/qa_forum.htm#recent_questions Q. Hi Tim, Are you aware of the movement to restore San Jose State's original name, California State [normal school] (1862-1921) and California State University, San Jose (1972-1974). For more info on the movement see, http://www.gostate.org. In addition to being historical proper, many alumni and students feel that having the more nationally recognizable words California State back in the school's identity would help them market their degrees. We also believe it would help elevate Spartan football from its current image as the team of a small-time city college commuter school, to that of a well known major California State University campus, not to mention the oldest one. Doesn't California State Spartans sound alot better than "SJSU Spartans"? Thanks, Gostate.org Gostate.org, San Jose, CA 12/17/04 A. I agree, though it might get me confused with Long Beach, Fullerton... I'm easily confused. Tim Kawakami 12/17/04 |
